Yea! It's New Year's Resolution time!
There are many reasons why people make New Year’s resolutions…the desire to start something new…the desire to end a habit and begin along a new path. Some people make these resolutions to challenge themselves and inspire others to do the same, others half-heartedly say, ‘well, what could it hurt?”
I have read that most people don’t keep their resolutions. They have good intentions, they even have strong desires, but life happens, “Old habits don’t die easily,” and schedules and work and family all conspire against us and we’re feeling a little guilty.
I love making New Year Resolutions for all of the above reasons and more. I believe that there is a faith connection here that is very applicable to our daily lives. Remember that great passage from II Corinthians 5:17 where Paul says, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away, behold, the new has come.” Paul goes on to say that we are reconciled to God because of what Christ has done for us. So every day, including December 31st, I make these resolutions…I want to be more like Jesus; I want to serve, love and encourage like Jesus today. I want to love my wife, my family, my brothers and sisters in Christ, the lost, the lonely, the hungry; I want to love them as Jesus loves me. And by God the Holy Spirit, working through the Word, I attempt to do exactly that. Will I love, serve, encourage others perfectly like Jesus…No. But then I am “in Christ,” and God, the Holy Spirit, assures me at day’s end that I am a forgiven, cherished child of God and by His grace, I get another shot tomorrow and the day after and all of the days until He takes me home.
I’m going to make some New Year resolutions that are the same that I made last year…even to be techier with my I Phone, but I’m not going to try with that one as much as with those others that matter in the kingdom!
So make some resolutions. Make some BIG resolutions! Live in grace every day of 2019.
